About Project Cagayan de Oro
On December 16, 2011 the island of Mindanao was hit by Typhoon Washi – locally known as “Sendong”. Heavy rains caused destructive flash flooding which killed over 1,200 people and left hundreds more still missing. Nearly 50,000 homes were damaged or destroyed.
After extensive discussion and assessment, we decided to respond with Project Cagayan de Oro, opening the door for volunteers to provide meaningful help on the ground.
Thus far, we have been helping homeowners to remove debris and mud from within their homes so that they can move back in from tent shelters or evacuation centres. We also have been cooperating with Catholic Relief Services, IOM and Habitat For Humanity Philippines.
Join us in our efforts to assist the communities affected by giving them a place to call home once again.
Volunteering
We opened our doors on January 20, 2012, and are currently accepting general volunteer inquiries through the 20th of March. Please click here to apply.
We’ve set up a wishlist of items that would be useful at Project Cagayan de Oro. If you are coming to volunteer, consider bringing an item. If you just want to donate something from the list, contact ProjectCDO@hands.org to coordinate sending it to the project.
