About Project Tohoku
The March 11 earthquake and tsunami damaged 7,200 homes in Rikuzentakata and Ofunato, Japan leaving 26,000 people in shelters and evacuation centers. There was also devastating damage to local industry, resulting in an economic loss equivalent to an estimated three years worth of the area’s GDP.
Following an invitation by the Mayor of Ofunato, we have been operating in Southern Iwate for over six months. Our volunteers are clearing highway ditches, rice field drainage systems, cleaning and retouching damaged photographs, and continuing to remove damaged materials from homes. Please see our updates for the amazing progress being made here.

Outcomes & Impacts
This program builds on the active response of the people and government of Ofunato and Rikuzentakata, aiding in the community’s recovery and providing support to families who are most in need. During an initial six‐month commitment, we expect to:
- Clean and rehabilitate 50 homes for re‐habitation by evacuee families
- Distribute 400 tons of fresh foods, providing nutritional support for 15,000 evacuees
- Coordinate 10,000 volunteer days using national and international volunteers
