About Project Minot

In late June, 10,000 Minot, North Dakota residents were forced to leave their lives behind as they fled from the worst flooding seen in over 130 years. Homes were engulfed, and pictures and memories were washed away by the overflowing Souris River. The prolonged flooding displaced a quarter of the area’s population and devastated more than 4,100 properties. These homes are becoming infected with mold and help is needed urgently to remove damaged possessions and building materials before winter severely affects the recovery efforts. We plan to be in Minot until at least October 1st.

The sheer size of the destruction and needs of the community requires more than gutting, cleaning and rebuilding. Project Minot features both an All Hands volunteer program and a disaster-wide cleanup coordination program. Our volunteers are in the field getting their hands dirty as they gut, clean and clear homes helping families and residents with those important first steps on the road to recovery. Minot residents have been sleeping in shelters or staying with friends and family for weeks; the help of volunteers will significantly quicken their return home. The Minot Recovery Coordination Center, managed by All Hands, holds a central database of over 1,250 requests for help which are referred to any of the volunteer organizations operating in Minot, including ourselves. This collaborative approach ensures work is completed as quickly as possible, using all available resources.
