We’re announcing Project Cagayan de Oro, our Philippines typhoon response project!
On December 16, 2011 the island of Mindanao was hit by Typhoon Washi – locally known as “Sendong”. Heavy rains caused destructive flash flooding which killed over 1,200 people and left hundreds more still missing. Nearly 50,000 homes were damaged or destroyed.
After an extensive needs assessment, we’ve decided to respond with Project Cagayan de Oro, opening the door for volunteers to provide direct and meaningful help on the ground. While programs are still in the planning phase, our initial assessment is suggesting two needed activities: clearing mud and debris, and building permanent shelters.
We’ll open our doors on January 20, 2012, and are currently accepting general volunteer inquiries through the 20th of March. Please click here to apply.
It may be weeks before international volunteers begin to respond in the Philippines, but there are several ways that you can help respond to Typhoon Sendong today:
If you want to put together an event, please let us know at events@hands.org and we can help support you. Any other questions, email fundraising@hands.org.
You can see our most up-to-date info on the the Project Cagayan de Oro page.
